Weeks law re enacted to conserve timber lands debate

Gov Locke Craig and Joseph Hyde Pratt urged timber conservation at a hearing as the House agriculture committee considered restoring the Weeks law to purchase Appalachian watershed and forest lands. The plan would cost about 2 million dollars yearly for five years and bring 3900 to 4000 acres of timber land under government control annually. Senator Weeks and others argued the nation must reserve land for timber growth, a view echoed by the American Forestry Association which backs development of reserves with returns.
