State Insurance Superintendent Vandiver may be asked to testify about contributions by John H Carroll of Burlington Railroad with possible revival of telegrams between Carroll and Vandiver. Carroll is ready to testify and claims a $5000 receipt for the 194 campaign fund, available for committee review.
United States Senator Dryden arrived in Trenton to meet Republican leaders Sen ator Hillery and Assemblyman Barber after sending a letter requesting a conference. A session was scheduled for next Monday at 2 o clock to hear objections from Dryden's opponents and respond in his own manner.
Austin Jan 28 Texas legislators form committees in both houses to probe a telegram accusing Senator Bailey of corrupting the legislature for reelection. A House resolution to broaden the probe was defeated. The joint investigating panel met again but yielded no material facts, with auditor Naudaln questioned and other hearings unproductive.
Reed Knox twenty six son of Senator Philander C. Knox and Miss Bessie McCook twenty one granddaughter of the late Capt. McCook married at Christ Episcopal Church in Alexandria Virginia. The unusual wedding was arranged with no prior notice to relatives and featured brief chaperoned rites and a late Washington dinner. Reed Knox serves as assistant clerk to the Senate Committee on Coast Defenses with a $1440 salary.
A severe rain squall hit Hongkong at dawn sinking more than fifty craft and drowning over 100 Chinese natives. No white casualties were reported as lifeboats and shore rescues saved several occupants. The harbor and river steamer Pant Bean were left adrift but unharmed.
A midnight blaze at the New York Transportation Company garage on Eighth Avenue and West Forty-ninth Street caused roughly three quarters of a million dollars in damage. A charging plant for electric vehicles was severely damaged and 0 private cars were destroyed. Special to The Washington Post New York January 28 reports Harry E Oelrichs 22 of 2 East Fifty-fifth Street son of Charles M Oelrichs and nephew of Hermann Oelrichs as Fuller Construction Company agent in charge of a Flatiron Building elevator. The building workers struck for higher wages and Oelrichs was running the car during the dispute. After quitting he treated the strike with indifference.

In Pittsburg on January 28 Mrs Della M Donner and her divorced husband Wham H Donner, a steel magnate, sat four hours at their nine year old daughter Margaret's bedside without exchanging a word as she died in her mother's arms. Mrs Donner, summoned from a hotel, left the room as soon as the child passed, with Mr Donner remaining unmoved.
Special to The Washington Post New York Jane-Joan T Williams a paying teller at Lincoln National Bank for 11 years was found dead near Bronx Park South Boulevard. An empty two ounce bottle labeled laudanum lay beside him. He had been off work since last Thursday with pneumonia and had counted his cash as usual when sick. Coroner's Physician Reigelman concluded suicide by laudanum.
Former Nebraska congressman W J Connell was found guilty of contempt by Judge Sutton after a multi day trial in Omaha Nebraska. Sentence reserved for tomorrow. Connell acted as attorney for President Howell of the Omaha Coal Dealers Association in the so called coal trust case. He is a former member of the Fifty first Congress defeated by W J Bryan two years after election over J Sterling Morton.
The Washington Fest reports Count Leo Tolstoi in critical condition at his residence in Yasnata Pohana. Various literary figures and society members have sent inquiries about the famed novelist and social reformer.
New York court adjourned with nine jurors chosen to try Harry K. Thaw for Stanford White murder. A new panel of 100 talesmen was ordered. juror Nos 8 and 9 are Charles D. Newton and J D Haas. The day saw cold conditions in the courtroom and Jack Barrymore may testify for the prosecution. The Countess of Yarmouth attended, Thaw appeared improved, and a humorous court-side tableau included Gen Peters dispensing recipes to his pity crew.
