Supreme Court Sets Aside Contempt For Tribune Respondents
The Supreme Court Monday set aside contempt sentences imposed on William L. Curtin and George Burdick of the New York Tribune for refusing to reveal sources in a grand jury probe of New York customs fraud. The court did not rule on compulsion to disclose sources, but upheld the refusal to testify on self incrimination grounds, even though presidential pardons had been prepared. The decision, with one justice not participating, holds pardons do not negate a witness’s objection to testifying if they do not accept the pardon.
