Railroads Run Down High Coal Ties in ICC Inquiry

The Interstate Commerce Commission report to Congress details findings on railroad ownership of coal properties. It recommends banning interstate carriers from owning coal lands or interests, cites the New York Central, Pennsylvania, and Baltimore and Ohio among those tied to coal firms, and urges publication of coal distribution systems and fair car allocation. The probe, under the Tillman-Gillespie resolution, targets favoritism and inflated freight rates across Eastern roads and other carriers connected to coal traffic.
