Rail workers demand record wages in nationwide March push

Special to The Washington Port New York Jan 28 Rail men estimate pay rolls could reach 1.5 billion with 400 000 workers from Maine to California voting to authorize leaders to bargain for higher wages. A country wide demand will press roads to meet new rates, with no arbitration. The payroll currently nears 1.5 billion for about 1.8 million workers. Two thirds of rail company costs go to labor. The unions seek a base pay day of eight hours or 100 miles for most services with overtime paid at time and a half, and higher freight speed basis from 10 to 14 mph. The unions insist on higher wages not shorter hours.
