Connecticut farmer buries horse and wagon after gift anger

Special to The Washington Post from Winsted Connecticut January 23. Samuel Mansfield of Norfolk Virginia received a horse wagon harness and blankets as a gift from Dr Frederick Dennis of New York City four years ago. The aging horse grew frisky and Mansfield killed the horse buried it with the wagon harness and blankets in a hole as large as a house cellar. Funeral services were held with friends attending. Mansfield is a Seventh day Adventist.

Ship Collision Kills Four as Republic Sinks in Fog

In dense fog near Nantucket the steamer Republic of White Star was fatally damaged after a collision with the Florida of the Lloyd Italiano line. The Florida rescued all Republic passengers, while the Republic's crew and officers evacuated to lifeboats. Baltic La Lorraine Lucania and revenue cutters raced to aid as watertight compartments failed and the Republic sank. Captain Sealby remained aboard until the final moments, refusing to abandon ship.
