Sainte-Beuve’s Influence Shapes Nineteenth Century Criticism
The essay traces Sainte-Beuve as the dominant nineteenth century literary critic whose methods influenced Matthew Arnold in England and Taine in France. It notes Taine’s theory deriving from Sainte-Beuve and claims many later critics, from James in America to Marinetti in France, reflect his impact. The piece highlights how the critic’s approach sharpened visions across cultures.
