Tobacco in Philippines Exports Dip Reports Taft Cable

Secretary Taft has received Manila a cable from Gov Wright detailing Philippine tobacco. Exports for the year ended June 30 totaled 19,144,290 pounds with 20 percent wrappers at 20 cents per pound and 80 percent fillings and smoking tobacco priced at 10 and 7.12 cents respectively. European buyers took 13,200,000 pounds under a tobacco monopoly while wrapper demand declines and natives shift to poorer grades for local and Spanish markets. Cigar exports fell 42 percent over two years, and Oriental markets eroded as cheaper tobacco from other Orientals competes.
