Stirling Divorce Case Spurs New Cross Petition In Edinburgh
Edinburg January 19 The cross petition for divorce between Clara Elizabeth Stirling, former Miss Sailor of Washington, and John Alexander Sinning Laird of Kippendatre Perthshire, came before Lord Guthrie. Lawyers for various interested parties including Lord Northland and Mrs Mabel Louise Atherton—divorced wife of Col Themis Atherton—were present. Mrs Atherton testified she was happy until the summer of 1908 when Stirling entered the scene. Cross-examination suggested Northland as a possible rival. Stirling denied but later admitted saying she told her husband last July that she loved Northland. The hearing was adjourned. In London last month Mrs Taylor Stirling’s mother entered residence accusing Mrs Atherton of an assault in a prior episode. Stirling, daughter of Charles H. Taylor, was formerly a showgirl and married Atherton after he divorced three years ago. Atherton named Captur de Buller as co-respondent, and Miss Taylor formerly worked at the census office in Washington. The case follows Stirling’s link to a musical, The Wild Rose, and Atherton’s suit for breach of promise. Cruiser leaves for Havana as Mississippi and Salem set course out of the Capes. destination unknown.
