Debate on Alaskan government railroad sparks Senate clash
Senate debate over a proposed Alaska government railway drew sharp opposition from Senator McCumber who warned it signals paternalistic socialism and would raise costs. He argued government salaries were higher and that private operation is preferable. Secretary Lane urged government ownership while citing colonial examples. The session planned final votes for Thursday, with amendments on taking over existing lines and a rejected plan for a government steamship link.
