Reports from Kingston Jamaica indicate an earthquake and ensuing fire destroyed much of the city. Estimates place 1000 dead and 26000 homeless, with vast property losses and widespread disruption. Aid efforts, refugee camps, and improvised hospitals are under way as authorities restore order.
Western Union Telegraph Company faces disrupted Jamaica service after Kingston building destruction. Staff scrambled to restore lines to Holland Bay while many messages remain delayed or undelivered. Kingston’s chaos complicates routing as Havana telegrams rely on Cuban operations. Continues on third pages.
Caracas reports indicate President Castro’s illness deepens the political crisis. Dr Revenga controls government powers as unemployment and living costs surge in the capital. Guerrilla leader Mantilla’s forces are said to have disbanded after warfront actions with Minister Arajo claiming a bloodless victory.
The London Times condemns U S railway management as manipulable by a few magnates who can steer any railroad to fit their schemes. It cites Union Pacific bond funds missing, hints at Herriman links, and argues shareholders are treated as gambling counters while wealth accumulates through plunder. It also notes Hill’s claim that 1.9 trillion dollars is needed for more tracks and terminals.
Steubenville and Springfield reports say Fred C Fairbanks son of Vice President Fairbanks faces a grand jury indictment for perjury over a marriage license affidavit. Lawyers and two wealthy Springfield citizens prepared a $600 bond for his appearance. Sheriff inquiries followed as Fairbanks disappeared after midnight leaving town with his wife and aunt unknown location.
A Mobile telegram from Honduras announces the end of ex President Policarpo Bonilla's attempted revolution aided by Salvad or and Nicaragua. Bonilla was captured January 7 and imprisoned. Honduran troops dispersed reinforcements, with rebels fled to Nicaragua and were captured. The government notes the entire country is now tranquil.
Friends of Senator Bailey in Fort Worth have asked Austin police for protection fearing violence. The requested safety measure comes amid concerns of threats against the senator while in Austin.
In Philadelphia on January 16 an Orphans Court proceeding about the estate of Robert Adams Sr. and his son Congressman Robert Adams Jr. reveals bonds worth about 70 000 missing. A broker testified Adams pledged canal company bonds to secure a loan. a letter written on the day of his death admits a “mess.” The case concerns H Carlton Adams as surviving executor and trustee amid disputes with relatives and alleged misappropriation. Adams Jr. died by self-inflicted gunshot in Washington.
Elizabeth Bollingsworth Brown 45, claiming ownership of the Killingaworth mine in Leadville, was held on $6,000 bail by Magistrate Whitman in a West Side court for examination on the charge of passing a worthless check at the Hotel Astor. Complainant George W. Avery of the hotel said Brown ran a bill of 7459 dollars from December 20 to January 6 and paid with a 6659 dollar check drawn on the American Security and Trust Company. the check proved worthless. Brown, contesting the payment refusal, threatened damages for defamation and claimed a large income from her Leadville mine.
The American Red Cross announced a large flour shipment by the steamer Coptic from San Francisco to aid famine districts in China. Dr Lewis Klopsch, editor of the Christian Herald, reported via Ellis that famine conditions are worse than feared and that 3 million dollars is needed within five months with 50,000 now to avert deaths for a month. The first U S food consignment totals 12,000 begs weighing 49 pounds each.
Shanghai reports warn that six hundred thousand people are doomed in SingKiang and Anthrig as famine and smallpox devastate refugee camps. Capt Kirton’s relief survey notes 400000 plus 250000 expected victims, with flood risks and failed local communications compounding misery.
Special to The Washington Fest. Mrs Mary Fay dies on the porch at 396 Third Avenue while Father O Connor of St Stephens Church prays nearby. The wedding is Miss Sarah McMackin to Prof William McAuliffe Jr connected with St Patrick's Cathedral School. Mrs Fay had nursed the bride since infancy and hoped to attend this wedding.
In Cleveland Ohio on January 16 Miss Anne Augusta White aged seventy six and Miss Mary I Blair aged sixty were found dead at 1932 East Sixty ninth Street. The house smelled of natural gas and investigators found a leak in a gas pipe and a chimney closed by a stove. Miss Blair, a former city schoolteacher, was last seen Monday. Blair was found near the foot of a stairway suggesting death while attempting to escape the house.
A ton of dynamite exploded today at the South Snore Stone Company quarry two and a half miles east of Monroe Michigan. One workman was killed and another seriously injured. The dynamite was stored in two small houses buried on the quarry side and the cause remains a mystery. The concussion was reported to be felt fifteen miles away.
President Roosevelt, Speaker Cannon, and Secretary Root led a banquet at the Ariington Hotel closing the national convention for foreign commerce extension. They urged fair Monroe doctrine policy, better consular service, and expanded trade with Santo Domingo and South America while praising the Navy and advocating tariffs to protect American interests.
