Bachmetieff former Russian minister to Japan may be named ambassador to the United States in place of Baron Rosen who would move to Rome to succeed M Moravieli who died in Rome last December 14. Confirmation is unavailable though officials say no general changes are decided. Baron Rosen, in Washington since July 33, 195, calls the dispatch rumor news as he doubts it.
Sacramento reports progress on three measures restricting Japanese business activity and segregation in communities. One bill bars aliens from serving on corporate boards affecting major Japanese import houses on the Pacific coast. A second restricts land holdings potentially covering hundreds of Japanese farmers. All three were discussed in committee with favorable reports and poised for Monday consideration.
Benjamin Karper receives two years and Joseph Sloane three years in state prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud. In Utica New York on January 15 Elisa Leona Gas ford and Mercedes Alexander, lifelong residents of Turin and daughters of wealthy families, were rushed to Utica hospital with appendicitis symptoms. Each came with her mother to await surgery, and they flipped a coin to decide which would be operated on first. Miss Alexander lost and underwent surgery early today. an hour later Miss Gaylord had her operation. Both are recovering well.
New Haven studies Tests by Dr Wiley from USDA Bureau of Chemistry to determine how different oyster shipping methods affect the shellfish. Dr W D Bigelow leads the division with inspectors T B Rayner J C Duff and Dr G W Stiles Jr. Tests compare shipping conditions and consignments, with samples to Washington for thorough examination.
Judge Brown in the United States circuit today sustained the defendant Oakes Ames and Francis W Breed in a suit against the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. The plaintiffs claimed damages for depreciation of stock in independent telephone companies bought by AT&T in violation of the Sherman antitrust act.
