Tax Boards Cited In Equity Court Over Gas Companies
Justice Gould cited District Commissioners Macfarland West and Morrow and tax officials to show cause on January 31 why they should not be enjoined from advertising or selling Washington Gaslight and Georgetown Gas Company property to satisfy delinquent taxes. The two gas firms seek to stop assessments based on a $99,306 increase for Georgetown and $1,000,000 for Washington Gaslight, arguing meters and service pipes are not real estate. They claim paying under protest and then suing would cause hardship given the large sums and risk of further tax actions before a judicial decision.
