Bank Messenger Ambush in New York City Bank Robbery

A planned ambush at a cigar factory on East Thirty-sixth Street netted $3,300 in currency plus silver from Union Exchange National Bank messenger Peter Plunkett, who was knocked unconscious. Detective James A. Watson was shot in the back amid a police chase as two highwaymen escaped with payrolls for Schwartzkopf & Ruckert and B. J. Rieser & Co. Vicious hold up foiled as detectives tail gang

Police followed a new band of hold up men through Thirty-Fourth Street and Second Avenue. Detectives Slevin Raftis Watson and Oliver, in disguise as workers, cornered two suspects near a cigar box factory and recovered the injured partner at Bellevue Hospital after a gunfire exchange. The other bandits escaped with pay rolls in a Park Avenue daylight robbery foiled by bystander alertness.
