Blood Money From China Indemnity After Lienchow Riots

The October 1905 Lienchow riots in China, which destroyed a mission and killed five American missionaries, will cost China about 30,000 for the government indemnity plus 40,000 for property losses and another 40,000 for the families. Interference by missionaries in a local celebration sparked the outbreak, drawing criticism over the idea of blood money and whether the Chinese should pay such indemnities. The State Department argued the payment would pressure China to behave, despite missionary opposition to the concept.
