Powers Holding Back Russia Delays Hague Peace Move
Germany wishes United States action but State Department favors delicacy. Disarmament talk seen as impractical and likely to obscure major issues. Nations ready to send delegates, yet no one initiates a date for the second Hague conference. Names of Distinguished Scientists Under Consideration for Smithsonian Secretary
The Smithsonian Institution’s board of regents will meet on January 28 to choose a new secretary to succeed the late Prof. William Langley. At least a dozen scientists have been formally or informally presented, but no formal tender has been made beyond proposing Prof. Henry Fairfield Osborn, who declined. Names like David Starr Jordan and Sir William Ramsay are discussed, though Ramsay is deemed unlikely as a foreign candidate. The regents aim to select a highly qualified successor who will accept the post, and no hurried decision will be made. The board prefers the man to the place, and will avoid canvassing while ensuring strong consideration of standout achievements.
