Rebate Scheme Claims Hit Independent Lines in Hearings
Joseph Purcell of Hard & Rand New York testified before the House merchant marine committee that a deferred rebate system operated since 1908 favored conference lines. He said his firm received up to 10 percent rebates for shipping coffee via Lamport Holt Prince and Hamburg South America lines. Peer testimony from J J Slechta of Lloyd Bragillero Line said his firm lost $6,000,000 over six years in Brazil trade.
