Cleveland Supreme Court Blocks Street Railway Takeover

The Supreme Court upheld a federal ruling restraining Cleveland from taking tracks and poles of the Cleveland Electric Railway Company and handing them to Forest City Company. It affirmed the end of the franchise to operate lines on Erle and Quincy streets while deeming the taking a due process issue, keeping the city from transferring property without compensation. The ruling preserves disputes as Mayor Johnson and City Council face costly prior lines crossing the city’s busiest streets.
