Wedded for 62 Years Recall Maine Romance Surprise Ceremony
Walter Higgins aged 86 and Almeda Lane Higgins aged 88, longtime Maine residents, celebrated their sixty second wedding anniversary in Hartford after a spontaneous ceremony. The couple met in western Maine and wed in Hartford on January 6 1880, completing a cross-state marriage journey to avoid notice. Higgins, a former telegraph line contractor, built major lines and later ran a stove and heating business in Washington. The couple preserves ties to Limington Academy and the Maine Association in Washington.

Watchers Hear Vessella A Night At National Theater
The National Theater offered an eventful watch to ring out the old year with Vessella's Italian repertoire. Conductor Oreste Veonetta drew unusually rich sound from a small orchestra, delivering notable pieces from Mascagni and Carmen. Leila Royer sang Tosca arias with a bright, clear upper register, while Saint-Saens Danse Macabre proved more curious than delightful.
