Annuities for clerks proposed in civil service reform bill
The House committee on civil service reforms led by Representative Gillette of Massachusetts introduced a measure to fund retirement annuities for classified civil service employees. Beginning July 1, deducted from monthly salaries at about 10th of a dollar, with 3.2 percent interest compounded annually, to provide quarterly life annuities equal to 3 12 percent of annual salary per year of service, retirement age set at 65 or 70 depending on group. The secretary of the treasury directs the annuity table, and the treasurer acts as custodian. Action seen as likely favorable from the committee, but unlikely before session end.
