Sixteen Die in Maitland Mine Explosion in Colorado

Special to The Washington Post. Walsenburg, Colo. Feb 19. A gas explosion at Victor Fuel Company’s Maitland coal mine left sixteen believed dead after eleven bodies were recovered. Nearly two hundred men were at work. fifty in an adjoining room burned but all escaped. Dead are Italians or Austrians, with two Americans Miller and Moran. Names include Anchie Miller fire boss Billy Moran James W. Titters Battista Robera Corona Costa Joe Costa Nicholas Yockibetx. Grieving crowds gathered as rescue efforts unfolded and bodies were brought out. The blast occurred in the oil workings.

Starving Lawyer Found Wandering on East Side

Clark B. Augustine of 557 West 148th Street and the firm Augustine & Hopping of 99 William Street was found in a demented state on the East Side after seven weeks missing. Taken to Bellevue Hospital doctors said overwork caused the condition. Police noted his wild behavior and his claim of being hungry with no food for days. He had $21, railroad tickets, and a fine emerald in his clothes. Family joyful at news of his recovery.

Mob Clamoring At Jail After Murder Of Margaret Lear

A mob gathered in Shreveport after a 15 year old girl, Margaret Lear, was attacked on a public road near her home. A negro, Charles Coleman, shot her in the neck when she resisted, killing her. Coleman was captured by a sheriff led posse and jailed, with a lynching threat forming by nightfall.

Murdered Roanoke City Official Found With Axe Blows

J B Traynham former city sergeant and longtime jailer was found murdered in his Roanoke room near the city hall. Police say the head wounds and throat slashing show an ax or hatchet used. robbery not the motive as money and a gold watch were left intact. Drowned by tidal wave fifty two families missing in flood

Panama reports that on February 5 President Reyes learned the tide of January 21 at Telemi Cauca and nearby towns rose over twenty feet. Fifty two families disappeared as the coast was swept by the flood and vast underground disturbances were felt. Dead birds and fish covered the shore after the water receded.

Injunction Halts Delivery of 4 Percent Bonds in New York

Special to The Washington Port reports Comptroller Metz was served with a Brooklyn court injunction blocking delivery of a large issue of registered 4 per cent corporate bonds. The 320 million issue faced bids averaging 3108,002. Lawyer William D. Cook filed the suit for plaintiff of record Seitz and others, with un disclosed additional clients.
