He was jabbed in the cheek by a pin causing facial swelling and blood poisoning leading to his death at City Hospital. Englund was age 57 and his death prompts a Massachusetts bill to curb hatpin length before a legislative committee.
Pope Pius X is confined to bed with influenza affecting his throat and bronchial tubes. Dr Petacci orders a fluid diet and rest as the Pope hopes to recover in a few days. Berlin reports a severe influenza epidemic with fourteen thousand cases.
Special to The Washington Post Newport R I reports that Commander Frank Marble of the Naval War College staff died after shooting himself, not by apoplexy as first reported. Authorities say overwork and a low mood may have driven the act. Marble fired twice in his library room, with one bullet grazing the head and the other entering the skull. He underwent brain surgery but died on the operating table. A naval inquest was held and the board's report was sent to Washington.
