Wall Street Faces Reform Push and Silver Backers Rise
In New York on February 9 the stock market fell late in the period after a dull week. Traders warn that only a handful of room operators kept activity alive while broader declines pressed prices. Bond yields drifted higher as demand for gold waned, and debate grows over government guarantees for deposits, free silver, and greenbacks. Daniel F. Kellogg notes rising calls for curbs on margin trading and a government currency issue as Bryan and Roosevelt shape political pressure for financial reform.
