Death at Fort Myer Cleared of Mystery by Self Inflicted Wound
Corporal Fred Poat of Troop G Thirteenth United States Cavalry died at Fort Myer Virginia an hour after receiving a gunshot wound in the head. Inquiry showed Poat shot himself in the right temple during a personal crisis while cleaning a Colt revolver. Cartridges found on him and the jury verdict stating death from a gunshot wound from his own hands point to suicide. Poat had recently recovered from typhoid, had seven years service, and planned to be discharged soon. comrades said he had no romance or brooding disposition. Capt Preston sent a full report and the jury’s findings to Poat’s father.

Free postal credit would erase large government deficit
A House committee report on the Post Office appropriation bill argues free mail from the government reduces the deficit. For six months ending December 31, 1906, open matter postage would total 2,286.27 dollars. the committee estimates 5.9 million dollars of mail is carried for the government annually without credit to the Post Office. The fiscal 1906 deficit was 10,000,000 dollars, and would be covered if federal free mail nationwide were fully accounted.
