Richmond Va Feb 2 A bill to regulate proprietary and patent medicines was introduced in the Virginia House. The measure would require clear labeling showing alvatol and opium quantities. A senate bill would crack down on adulterated liquors with heavy penalties and brand requirements. A separate House measure seeks a Maury Monument funded at 16400 dollars with a governor led commission. Senator Kearns of Halifax is sworn in as civil senator.

The three masted schooner Maggie Hart, Capt. G L Foster, lumber from Wilmington and New York, stranded four south of Cape Hatteras. Foster and seven crew were rescued by Capt. In Hagerstown Maryland on February 2 Adjt Lydia Lovell of the Salvation Army was arrested after complaints from citizens about her street preaching and singing. Three Die in Delorme Mine Blast Near Roanoke

Treasure in Mud Yields Spanish Coins Worth 890
A colored girl walking along a Westmoreland County creek bank uncovered a mud‑stuck jar on HE Goodridge farm containing Spanish silver coins valued at about 890 dollars. The coins were old, none newer than sixty five years. The jar was handed to Mr. Goodridge. In Hagerstown, a fire at the old Avondale mansion caused about 5000 dollars in losses. the mansion was part of Dr. F. D. Mitchell estate and a notable local structure.
