Government Deficit Near Elimination Reported
The treasury shows a deficit almost wiped out with deficits reduced from over 28.5 million to under 3.4 million. Cash balance on hand and deposits reach about 144.0 million. Revenue gains from customs and internal taxes drive the improvement, January customs at 26.89 million, surpassing last year by over 4.5 million. Expenditures for January 1905 lower by about 2.5 million due to reduced interest payments.
Decision Favors Railroad In Flour Freight Rates
The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled in the case of J. and S. Vannon against the Mobile and Ohio Railroad that floor rates from St Louis Ava and Carro to Gordo Alabama are not shown as unreasonable. It notes some Alabama flour shipments pay rates per barrel far below double the per hundred weight rate in sacks, contrary to law, and calls for a uniform relation between barrel and sack flour rates while keeping the case on docket unless barrel rates are adjusted to align with sack rates.
