More Truth Than Poetry by James J Montague in 1921
The piece contrasts a life of unremitting work and public service with social mockery and economic critique, noting that taxpaying virtue earns little worldly praise. It questions a creed of selfless giving amid a cynical world, then pivots to a humor strip about a curious zoological metamorphosis in Chicago where hens seem to turn bears. The column closes with a post-Christmas thrift resolve fading into neglect.
