Speed War in the West Amid Mail Contract Clash
Efforts to settle differences between the Santa Fe and Union Pacific over transcontinental mail contracts have failed and a speed war is expected. The Santa Fe won’t change its fast schedule, while Union Pacific with Burlington and the San Pedro route aims to cut Chicago to Los Angeles time. Contracts total about 159000. Additionally, bids may draw in more money and risk. Capt. J R Farla, of Staunton Virginia, died after being injured alighting from a Chesapeake and Ohio train. He was about eighty and survived by his widow, three daughters, and two sons. A later note mentions Bucklen's Arnica Salve for a painful auto accident.
