Bell Recalls Early Telephone Tales in Washington Speech
Alexander Graham Bell spoke at the Masonic Temple on the telephone’s early days and its spread to Europe. He noted the first foreign language spoken over the line, the first medical conference, and an 1876 Japanese test by students in Boston and Harvard. He traced operator ages and the shift to women, and described experiments with a bell and early transmission challenges. A. H. B. Berry and J. M. Waters presided as the Telephone Society and Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company hosted the event with a film on the system’s development.
