Killer of Gainesville horse owner confesses after arrest
William Turner, a Black man, confessed to murdering wealthy horse owner F. C. Avery in Gainesville Florida, claiming Avery struck him with a ax in the stable. Turner buried Avery’s body in a shallow grave and later traveled to Washington with two valued thoroughbreds, trying to borrow money to ship them and sell at a fraction of their value. Police say Turner possessed two $3,300 horses and used Avery’s name on a prior ticket to travel.

Greek ships commandeered to ship food to Greece from U S ports
London's dispatch says the Greek government has ordered all Greek ships in British and American ports to carry food and coal to Greece amid Entente restrictions. Vessels over 1,500 tons are to Hampton Roads, with expectations of dispatch and possible increased Greek shipping to the United States. Experts differ on impact, noting only one Greek freighter in port and uncertainty from the Greek legation. Meanwhile Norfolk ministers oppose President Wilson’s war preparedness program.
