Endowment House Oaths Hearings Highlight Mormon Plural Marriage
The Senate Privileges and Elections Committee heard more testimony on Mormon endowment oaths and a alleged plural marriage of Abram Cannon to Lillian Hamlin in 1895. Mrs Fred Ellis, Abram Cannons first wife, testified to Cannon marrying Lillian Hamlin after his deathbed confession. August Lundstrom, a church elder, described multiple temple rites and oaths of sacrifice and retribution, the law of sacrifice, and the oath to avenge Joseph Smiths blood. The session was delayed by weather and resumed with further questioning of James H Wallis Jr and others. The witness described church tensions and doubts about church teachings while noting Cannon died shortly after the marriage. The committee planned to resume hearings at 10 a.m.
