Whitney Home for Rent End of Fight to Protect Fifth Avenue
The Whitney home at Fifty seventh street and Fifth avenue is to be offered for rent to quiet tenants engaged in inconspicuous trades. The move signals the waning of efforts to preserve Fifth Avenue south of Central Park as a residential area, despite Vanderbilt-descent owners resisting commercial encroachment. The Vanderbilt family, via marriage, appears to have effectively capitulated as the corner property may now host a trade with no outward display.
