Fashionable displays of books and art rooms rise in society
Wealthy Americans set aside rooms to showcase authors and artists. John Hays Hammond’s Washington home features a Greuze chamber with works by living artists and Louis Quinze furnishings. Other celebrated rooms include Napoleon-themed spaces. Diana Churchill is guarded by Scotland Yard due to threats from suffragists. Public figures like Mrs. Payne Whitney and Mrs. John H. Bankhead are noted for literary and culinary collections. The Metropolitan Opera opened with Giancomo Fuccini’s The Girl of the West, drawing a high society audience including Marcella Sembrich and numerous prominent families.
