Opium in U S Said More Dangerous Than Whisky
Health commissioner Dr. Royal Copeland warns the opium habit in the United States mirrors prewar China and calls for urgent national action. He cites 1918 imports of crude opium totaling 564000 pounds and 640000 pounds the next year, equating to about 50 grains per person, and argues opium’s danger exceeds alcohol. He notes Americans fear whisky but opium’s harm is greater. The piece contrasts constitutional prohibition with the opium threat and discusses societal reach of users.
