Treasury Gets Big Notes A Bank Aids Secretary Shaw
Treasury officials credited a New York bank with aiding Secretary Shaw by locating 450 notes of 1000 dollars and sending them to Washington for conversion to small denominations. Treasury data show 68 million in large US notes and 27 million in large silver certificates outstanding, all usable to ease the current small-note shortage. The find highlighted a gap between reserves and banker claims of no large notes on hand. Sixty old Treasury notes of the 1890 Sherman act were found but only 250 remain outstanding.

Biddle Urges Better Firehouse Ventilation and Bathing
Engineer Commissioner Biddle endorses a council committee report calling for improved ventilation and heating in District engine houses. Crowded dormitories, insufficient funds, and a need for hot water facilities prompt recommendations for separate heating and upgraded baths. The Brookland engine house example shows overcrowding worsening conditions, with further repairs and new-build considerations tied to limited appropriations.
