French Subjects Lose Suit To Regain Property
A memo by Chief Justice McCoy in the District of Columbia Supreme Court dismisses the suit by Countess Pauline Ondre de La Mettrie and George Pratt de Gasquet James to recover more than 65000 dollars tied to Mme Elizabeth Pratt de Gasquet James and Col Thomas W Miller. The plaintiffs alleged reciprocal debt rights under alien enemy laws were violated as assets were seized when the widow remarried a German cousin of the Kaiser. The court found no proof of reciprocal rights by the French government, upholding the defense by Assistant Attorney General Dean H. Stanley.
