Change in Philippine coin weight to lighter silver
In response to high silver prices the Philippine government passes a law to recoin Philippine pesos at 20 grains of silver 500 fineness for the new coins. The 6 and 10 centavo pieces are adjusted proportionally. Recoinage will occur in the United States starting early next year as old coins are retired and shipped to San Francisco. Face value remains the same with a gold standard fund maintaining parity. The lighter weight responds to bullion value rises and large outflow from the islands.
