Officials to Melt Old Engraving Plates After January First
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing has completed classifying old steel plates to be melted at the navy yard after January 1. A three member committee, chosen annually by the Secretary of the Treasury, will verify the plates during the process. A plate’s life for greenbacks ranges from one month to a year or more, and last year over 4,000 plates weighing nineteen tons were melted. Previously the molten metal was discarded, but navy yard officials have begun finding uses for it in the past two years.
