Origin of the National Thanksgiving Day
A historical note traces how the annual Thanksgiving was established not by Lincoln but during Andrew Johnson's presidency. A committee from the First Congregational Church urged Johnson on October 3, 1865, to set a yearly day of thanks, leading to the last Thursday of November celebration now common nationwide. The piece lists committee members and notes the church's early ties and notable figures such as Rev. H. Boynton and Gen. Henry V. Boynton, plus surviving original congregants.
