French French take Chavigny and Cuffies in Somme drive

British and French forces press the Somme line advances from the west and south driving German troops from Chavigny and Cuffies and capturing towns along the line. British forces report gains near Bailleul and Le Transloy while Northwest of Arras strong actions near Drocourt Queant and surrounding pockets continue with heavy artillery support.

Official War Reports From Haig Front Tonight

Official statements from Field Marshal Haig in France describe heavy fighting on most of the front. Our troops entered Blencourt les Bapaume and Bancourt and captured Fremicourt Vaulx Vaulx Vraucourt, reaching Beugny’s western outskirts and taking prisoners. Canadian troops gained ground astride the Arras Cambrai road near Hendecourt and Haucourt, with several hundred prisoners taken. Bullecourt Hendecourt saw strong enemy counterattacks repelled. Lys sector shows withdrawal by the enemy as Bailleul returns to our control. We crossed the Canal Dumord at two points near Callancy Beguains and took Cheville fag Hill 89, holding parts of Noyon region and Champs Chavigny Cuffles, advancing toward Crouy western outskirts.

H Herman Harjes of Morgan Harjes and Co formerly high commissioner of the American Red Cross Society for France and Belgium was seriously injured in an auto accident near Versailles Aug 30.
