Dr William E Davidson Washingtons new schools chief plans a thorough investigation into high school fraternities and sororities. About twelve groups exist mainly centered at Central High and Manual Training, each with about twenty members. Outcome could abolish or permit secret societies based on merits.
Mrs Hattie Barnes, distressed by grief from seeing her husband mourned by another, set in motion a spree of suicide attempts at the local police headquarters. Leora Van Horn, 14, swallowed belladonna at a friend’s home in Northwest Washington to avoid an arranged marriage. She told a friend and the friend’s mother she was engaged to a much older man and did not want to marry him. She recovered at Emergency Hospital after the poison was found in a vial. parents deny knowledge of any engagement.
Special to The Washington Fuse reports three men Alphonse Schingh of Ottawa Joseph Le Blanc of Montreal and Laurien Marineau of Three Rivers were killed at Hast Templeton on the Ottawa River when a tree fell during a fierce wind and rain storm overnight. Names of the deceased and their origins are listed in the casualty notice.
In Chesterfield Virginia Henry Beattie faces a murder charge in the death of his wife. The defense rests on Beattie’s original story of a holdup and an unknown shooter. A key witness Holland testified seeing a man with a shotgun near the scene. Beattie collapsed sobbing as the testimony proceeded.
