Warning by Shonts Talks of Political Pigmy Leaders

Centerville Iowa August 28 Theodore F Shonts president of Clover Leaf Chicago and Alton and Interborough Metropolitan companies spoke on transportation at a homecoming address. He warned that if reformers gain control and legislate against rebates or place railroads under commissions prosperity will end and the nation will face misery. He urged honesty in dealing and argued political forces can strip railroads of autonomy yet not fund them. He defended the value of bankers and railroad managers while condemning those who oppose private operation but favor state boards. He cited labor impacts showing a drop from 1 675 000 railroad employees to idle workers with wage losses and a vast decline in railroad purchases.
