Burley Hanged in District Jail for Rape in 1903
John W. Burley, the first Black man executed in the District for rape, was hanged on the district jail scaffold after a 15 second drop. He calmly faced the death sentence, uttering a final muted plea and the prayer, God have mercy on my soul. He reportedly ate two meals that day and had spiritual counsel from Father McGuire before execution. The ceremony drew jurists, physicians, and reporters as Warden Harris oversaw the procedure. Burley’s crime involved abducting and assaulting a four and a half year old girl in Ward's alley north west, with prior indictments and a long history of convictions shaping the death verdict. The body was later removed for burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
