President Wilson calls for wage restraint to curb high living costs
In a White House proclamation on August 25 1919 President Wilson argues that rising living costs stem from temporary wartime conditions and warns that wage increases would boost production costs and fuel inflation. He emphasizes maintaining government led price and wage discipline until peace normalizes production and transport. He notes railway workers deserve a four cent an hour readjustment and pledges fairness for all railway staff while avoiding broad wage hikes.

Wilson Rejects Shopmen Wage Demands Amid Price Panic
President Wilson dismissed wage hikes for shop workers and warned that unchecked price increases threaten national peace and prosperity. He urged focus on reducing living costs and said wage adjustments must wait for normal conditions even as he urged concerted action to curb inflation.
President urges wage truce while aiming to lower prices
The President told shopmen that government efforts to curb profiteering and lower essential goods prices are producing early relief. He urged a wage truce until conditions normalize, noting temporary wage hikes in shipyards and arsenals as a basis for comparison. A Labor Federation vote on wage demands showed 38 percent in favor, but the President said a congressional wage commission is not feasible and urged restraint to prevent a crippling rail disruption.

Intervention Near. US to Bear Costs and Demand Payment
The article notes a near intervention by the United States with costs borne by Americans and slow returns. It says Mexico must be required to pay fully, with possible annexation discussed but opposed. Intervention is framed as necessary to defend American lives, not to protect property, though property protection and national recovery are later aims.
