War would not mean Wilson's reelection, says Chairman Hilles
Charles D Hilles, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said support for Wilson on foreign policy in 1916 would not guarantee his reelection. He asserted that the next Republican nominee would be chosen by the party and that campaign lines would center on party politics. Hilles also stated that in a potential war with Mexico the President would have united domestic support, but that this would not imply approval of his domestic policies or reelect him.
