Metcalf's Comet Nears Perihelion This Week
The youngest of the heavenly wanderers, Metcalf's comet, is rapidly approaching perihelion next Tuesday August 40. It will then move away into space and not reappear for years. Astronomers have computed its orbit, and last night it lay 7 minutes of time west and 22 minutes of arc north of Gamma Serpentis. The distance to the sun at perihelion will be about twice Earth's distance. Naval Observatory astronomers are tracking its path nightly as brightness fades due to increasing distance from Earth.
