Mechanical patents reached 574, while 247 were trademarks and labels, aided by the new trademark act of April 1, 1905 lowering fees and expanding protection. Chief Clerk Ireland notes many trademarks arise across varied goods, with few pioneer patents mainly on voting machines, engines, registers, and wireless tech. Heraldry inspires many trademarks as originators borrow from Burke's Peerage to craft appealing marks.
