Cape Charles Virginia reports a man named Samuel Alerts from Beaver Tam traveling at night when swarms of mosquitoes blinded him and his horse. Walter Wellmans second attempt to sail over the North Pole in the balloon America ends in failure near Spitzbergen Aug 18 after a guide rope breaks and the airship is damaged. The steamer Fram tows in the craft and crew transfer aboard with no injuries, plans for a new voyage stated by Wellman.
