Motoring on the sly and the tricky chauffeur tale
A long critical narrative on chauffeurs in early car culture. It describes blacklisted drivers, excessive speeding, and the fraught dynamics between owners and drivers. It notes how repair trades profit from accidents, the burden of fuel use, and the social risks of bachelor chauffeurs dating country women while city owners gamble with guest services.
Car Chauffeurs and Record Setting Discussed at Night Meet
Reports describe car maintenance and polishing routines, with engines cleaned and parts oiled. A chauffeur, claiming 3,400 miles in a week, has run one car for eight months at no cost to the owner, earning $200 monthly plus allowances. The piece notes drivers dodge laws, fear arrests for fines, and boast records from nearby towns, while weather and fast runs affect outcomes.
