Taft orders inquiry into Athens camp clash death
Secretary of War Taft ordered a full investigation led by Gen Bates into last night’s clash at Camp Herrick near Athens Ohio between regular army troops and Ohio National Guard members. Corporal Charles Clark of Warren Ohio was killed and three guardsmen injured. Testimony indicated many attackers were regulars from the Fourteenth Infantry, while Gov Herrick cautioned against portraying it as a general feud. The coroner’s inquest and further arrests were expected to proceed Monday.
